In My Dreams

39 × 37 cm (15½ × 14½ in.)

I combined elements from several related paintings, piecing them together like a patchwork and feeling my way towards an image. Every positioning of texture, tone and colour was carefully considered before sticking each piece down. I used PVA glue to reassemble these on another heavyweight sheet of watercolour paper.

Collage

There are entire books dedicated to collage, so all I want to highlight here is how collage can relate to watercolour, either as a base or an embellishment, to move ordinary paintings forward into something more unusual. There are infinite opportunities for exploration, so I am simply going to list some possibilities to whet your appetite.

It is a personal decision as to whether or not you worry over the archival properties of your chosen materials. My own choice is to only use lightfast materials. If I am not sure whether a printed material is lightfast, I will photocopy it using good-quality, lightfast printing ink and use that instead. Use PVA glue or acrylic medium to stick down your collage materials. The latter is best if you are going to add wet paint on top as it is more waterproof, but the PVA may cope better with sticking materials that are heavy or absorbent.
